“Absolutely spotless”. Fantastic reviews for Hommage à Trois
William’s second solo CD Hommage à Trois was recently released to great praise from the press. The album celebrates the lovers, jokers, hedonists and Lotharios of three of the Classical period’s most popular composers: Mozart, Haydn and Cimarosa.
International Record Review said it is “absolutely spotless”, “one of the most delightful recital discs of the past year” and praised the well thought-out programming: “vastly musical and entertaining”. Tim Ashley awarded the disc 4*s in The Guardian and particularly praised the Haydn arias on the CD which “show off Berger’s coloratura and the beauty of his upper registers to perfection”.
The CD was featured on BBC Radio 3’s CD Review programme the week it was released. Presenter Andrew MacGregor called it “an imaginative recital tackled with infectious musical enthusiasm” and BBC Radio 3 played Cimarosa’s Il Maestro di Cappella in full on their Live in Concert programme earlier this year.
Further praise came from Gramophone who pronounce the disc to be “a beautifully recorded recital that enhances the young baritone’s credentials as a fine Classical stylist”, and BBC Music Magazine praised William’s lyrical baritone, describing his top notes as “almost tenorially easy”.
Other comments came from Barihunks: “One of the most delightful releases that we’ve heard in years”; Early Music Review: “the singing is impressive without being overdone” and Opera Now awarded the CD 5 stars.
You can purchase Hommage à Trois from iTunes or Amazon. William’s debut disc Insomnia: A Nocturnal Voyage in Song was also highly praised, being selected by The Guardian critics as one of their top CDs of 2012. You can purchase that here.
